It’s the weekend of the Dupont Kalorama Museum Walk, the Washington Folk Festival, Takoma Trukgarten and Bourbon & Bluegrass. More readings and concerts celebrating Walt Whitman are coming up on Friday (the poet’s 200th birthday) and Saturday. Also on Saturday: mandolinist Chris Thile’s “Live from Here” will broadcast from Wolf Trap and balalaikas will ring out in Rockville. Whitman 200: Birthday Concert and Reading
On Friday, May 31, at noon, the Arts Club of Washington, 2017 I St. NW, will celebrate Walt Whitman’s 200th birthday with a free concert of songs set to Whitman’s poetry, performed by soprano Jennifer Piazza-Pick and pianist R. Timothy McReynolds. The musical selections will be interspersed with a reading of original poems inspired by Whitman by poet Kim Roberts, author of “A Literary Guide to Washington, DC.” For details, visit walt200.org.
Henry Flory Violin Recital
Violinist Henry Flory, a D.C. native who studied at Peabody and Juilliard, will give a recital on Friday, May 31, at 8 p.m. at Potter Violins, 7711 Eastern Ave. in Takoma Park, Maryland. Historical Tea at DAR Museum
On Saturday, June 1, from noon to 2 p.m., the DAR Museum, 1776 D St. NW, will host a tasting of teas popular in the 18th century and related activities. The event is informal, but attendees are invited to wear 18th-century or afternoon-tea attire. Takoma Trukgarten
This one-day beer festival — on Saturday, June 1, from noon to 5 p.m. in the TPSS Co-op Parking Lot, 201 Ethan Allen Ave. in Takoma Park, Maryland — will feature local breweries pouring more than 20 different craft beers, plus cider and wine. There will also be live music and food from area restaurants and food trucks. Admission, including a souvenir glass, is $35 for six tastings and $45 for 12 tastings. ‘Live from Here’ with Chris Thile
A Saturday-night destination for radio audiences everywhere, “Live from Here” — the successor to “A Prairie Home Companion” — is a variety show featuring musical performances, comedy and audience interaction. On Saturday, June 1, at 5:45 p.m., the show, hosted by mandolinist Chris Thile, will broadcast from Wolf Trap, 1551 Trap Road in Vienna, Virginia. Whitman 200: ‘The Musical Genius of Bernard Herrmann’
This concert, “Beyond Psycho: The Musical Genius of Bernard Herrmann,” on Saturday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m. at Washington National Cathedral, 3101 Wisconsin Ave. NW, is devoted to the famed film-score composer. A Walt Whitman bicentennial event, it will feature the world-premiere concert performance by PostClassical Ensemble of the 1944 radio drama “Whitman,” with William Sharp in the title role. Washington Balalaika Society 30th Anniversary
The Washington Balalaika Society will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Saturday, June 1, at 8 p.m. with a concert by a 60-piece orchestra conducted by Artistic Director Svetlana Nikonova at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre, 603 Edmonston Drive in Rockville, Maryland. The program, featuring three domra virtuosi and a balalaika master, includes works by Rossini, Mussorgsky, Andreyev and Glière. Dupont Kalorama Museum Walk
Anderson House, Dumbarton House, the National Museum of American Jewish Military History, the Phillips Collection and the President Woodrow Wilson House will open their doors free of charge on Saturday, June 1, and Sunday, June 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (the Phillips opens at noon on Sunday) for the 36th annual Dupont Kalorama Museum Walk. Washington Folk Festival at Glen Echo
This year’s Washington Folk Festival, presented by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington and the Glen Echo Park Partnership, will take place on Saturday, June 1, and Sunday, June 2, from noon to 7 p.m. at Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Boulevard in Glen Echo, Maryland. The free festival will showcase over 400 musicians, storytellers, dancers and crafters, with dance workshops in the Spanish Ballroom and a craft marketplace in the Bumper Car Pavilion. Bourbon & Bluegrass at Lincoln’s Cottage
Also on Saturday, June 1, and Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 5 p.m., President Lincoln’s Cottage, 140 Rock Creek Church Road NW, will hold its fifth annual Bourbon & Bluegrass event. Admission includes two drink tickets (bourbon provider: Knob Creek), beer samples and unlimited nonalcoholic beverages. Attendees can bring picnic baskets and food will be available for purchase. No outside alcoholic beverages or pets are allowed. The event will include live music, lawn games, square dancing, a beard grooming station and exterior preservation tours of President Lincoln’s Cottage. All proceeds go toward preservation efforts at the cottage. One-day tickets are $65, $35 for ages 7 to 20 and free for 6 and under. Taste of Peru
