Weekend Round Up September 15, 2016


This weekend, the National Gallery of Art’s West Garden Court will be alive with the virtuosic and intimate sounds of the guitar. Presented in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the National Gallery of Art recognizes the contributions made by and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States, and celebrates their cultures through music. Other performances Friday 9/16 at 1:10 p.m., Saturday 9/17 at 3 p.m. and Sunday 9/18 at 3:30 p.m.

Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery hosts an opening reception for “Life Soundtrack: Prince/Bowie & … : A Visual Response to Musical Loss.” Throughout time, there has always been a creative connection between artists and musicians. Inspiration and collaboration flows between the vocations seamlessly. When an artist leaves this world from one genre, the other inevitably shares the pain. The gallery has invited 17 of the most influential artists in the D.C. area to create a visual remembrance, inspired by the recent loss of some of our greatest musical icons and examine the elusive connection between a person and a brilliant stranger.

The District Oktoberfest is D.C.’s official kickoff to the best month of the year. Participants enjoy one premium 12-ounce Oktoberfest beer at each venue they visit, plus specials on food pairings, liquor pairings and additional beers. Heurich House has partnered with the DC Brewers Guild to present a one-of-a-kind Oktoberfest experience, with local beers on tap in honor of D.C.’s most successful brewmaster, Christian Heurich (1842-1945). Castle Garden transforms into a biergarten as beers, brats, pretzels, kraut and pickles are served all afternoon, accompanied by live German music from Der Gemutlichkeits. The museum will be open for self-guided tours from 1 to 2 p.m. Guests receive a complimentary tasting mug and food ticket good for one bratwurst, two pretzels, one pickle and one serving of kraut.

Angel Gil-Ordóñez conducts PostClassical Ensemble in “Mozart, Amadeus, and the Gran Partita,” a one-of-a-kind program including an actor, a wind ensemble, a courtly minuet and new choreography by Igal Perry. Known as the “Gran Partita,” Mozart’s “Wind Serenade in B-flat major” is the most famous of all such serenades. The performance will feature dancers from the Washington Ballet Studio Company and pianist Philip Hosford as Salieri.
