Basketball Hoyas Off to a Flying Start (photos)

Coach Patrick Ewing’s Georgetown University men’s basketball squad extended their record to 6-1 this week with home victories over the Campbell Flying Camels (Nov. 24) and the Richmond Spiders (Nov. 28) at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

The nation’s leading scorer, Chris Clemons posted 45 points for Campbell University (3-3), but it wasn’t enough as the Fighting Camels lost to the Hoyas 93-85. Clemons, a 5-foot-9 senior guard from Raleigh, North Carolina, was nothing short of spectacular, making 16 of 28 shots from the field, including nine of 19 from three-point range. He also had eight rebounds and raised his season scoring average to 33.8 points per game.

With his famous dad Alonzo watching from the sidelines, Georgetown’s 6-foot-9 graduate student Trey Mourning had career highs in points (27), rebounds (12) and minutes (34). It was the first double-double of his college career. Mourning missed all of last season due to injury. Freshman James Akinjo had 17 points and four assists for the Hoyas.

Though the Hoyas led for virtually the entire game, last night’s 90-82 win against the University of Richmond (2-5) was closer than expected, with Georgetown not pulling away until the final minute. Richmond had earlier lost two key starters to injury. Hoyas’ senior center Jessie Govan led all scorers with 29 points on 11-for-15 shooting, just one point below his career high. Georgetown’s freshman backcourt of Mac McClung and James Akinjo added 16 and 13 points, respectively. It was a career high for McClung. Grant Golden led the Spiders with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.

Georgetown returns to action next Monday, Dec. 3, with a tougher test against the Liberty Flames (6-1) at Capital One Arena. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m.
