Creighton Edges Georgetown 91-87 in Hoops Action (photos)

The two highest scoring teams in the BIG EAST Conference locked horns in a highly competitive and entertaining game. In the end, the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team fell 91-87 to the visiting Creighton University Bluejays on Monday, January 21 at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C.

The Hoyas’s season has been marred by a failure to close out tight games when they held the lead in the final minutes. Add another one to the list.

Sophmore guard Ty-Shon Alexander had a game leading 26 points for the Bluejays, including the go-ahead three-pointer (his 6th triple of the game) with 55.9 seconds left after teammate Mitch Ballock dove on the floor to recover his own miss. Senior center Jessie Govan, who led the Hoyas with 22 points and 12 rebounds, failed to convert on consecutive shots from inside the paint, before Ballock put things beyond reach hitting on 4 straight foul shots.

Freshman guard James Akinjo, who was a surprise non-starter for the Hoyas, played a key role with a carreer high 11 assists, the most for any Hoya since 2014. It was Akinjo’s three-pointer that gave the Hoyas an 85-83 lead with 2:09 to play.

Creighton, which broke a 4 game losing streak, improved their record to 11-8 with the win, and 2-4 in BIG EAST play. Georgetown is now 12-7 overall and also 2-4 in league play.

The Hoyas will next play on the road at St. John’s on Jan. 27. Their next home game will be an 8 PM start on Jan. 31 against Xavier.
