D.C. May Spend Millions on Dog Park
The District is planning to bid $2.1 million to preserve a Columbia Heights dog park. The estimated cost of purchasing the park, at 1100 Park Road NW, from Metro — which wants to sell it as surplus property — has caused some to question if it’s a worthwhile expenditure. Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Kent Boese said the city should consider cheaper alternatives. Council member Brianne Nadeau is in favor.
No Bald Eaglets This Spring
Liberty, a female bald eagle, and Justice, a male bald eagle, have fled their nest, meaning that the two eggs they left behind will not hatch this spring. The eagle couple has hatched almost two dozen eaglets at the nest, around 100 feet up in a tree at the Metropolitan Police Academy in Southwest D.C. Eagle experts will not intervene, saying that the eggs will not hatch regardless of what action is taken. UPDATE: Liberty and Justice have reunited in the nest, but the nature of eagle fertility precludes a brood this spring.
Silver Spring Turn-Backs May End
For 35 years, Metro’s Red Line has turned around at Silver Spring half the time instead of going on to the actual end of the line at Glenmont. Montgomery County leaders and affected Metro riders are hoping the turn-backs end this year. Because of the turn-backs, Metro riders in Glenmont, Wheaton and Forest Glen tend to experience slower service and longer wait times.
