Fordham’s Late Heroics Spoil Hoyas Homecoming (photos)

On Saturday, the Georgetown football team (4-2, 0-1 Patriot League) was stunned as quarterback Tim DeMorat of Fordham (3-4, 1-0 Patriot League) hit Fotis Kokosioulis on a 17-yard pass on the back corner of the end zone with just 16 seconds left. The play, on 4th and 10, handed the Hoyas a crushing 30-27 loss.

The game couldn’t have started better, as Hoyas quarterback Gunther Johnson connected with Michael Dereus on an 81-yard reception on the game’s first play from scrimmage, immediately followed by a TD plunge by Herman Moultrie III from the one-yard line.

Later in the quarter, a block of a Brad Hurst punt led to a Zach Davis two-yard score, giving Fordham a narrow 16-15 lead at halftime.

The Hoyas took their last lead 27-23 with just seven minutes to go on another Moultrie run, capping a 70-yard drive. The game appeared to be out of reach for the Rams when Hoyas defensive back Leon Agee intercepted a DeMorat pass in Fordham territory with three minutes to go. But after stopping Georgetown on downs on the Fordham 26-yard line with no time outs remaining and just 1:21 left on the clock, DeMorat engineered an eight-play drive to provide the margin of victory.

The tight game, which saw numerous lead changes, had a bit of everything, including three blocked kicks and a rare Georgetown two-point runback of a botched Fordham extra point. The loss broke a four-game Hoyas winning streak.

The 525 yards gained by the Hoyas was their most ever against a Patriot League opponent. Johnson finished 13-for-17 passing for a season-high 280 yards, while also rushing for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Dereus caught four passes for 149 yards, while Joshua Tomas accounted for 131 receiving yards on a team-high seven catches to go with his 39 yards rushing. DeMorat was 18 of 35 passing for 214 yards and two touchdowns.

The Hoyas’ next game will be at home at Cooper field on Oct. 19 against Lafayette. It will be broadcast live.
