‘Free Britney Spears’ Movement Brings Rally to D.C. (photos)

The “#FreeBritney” movement was launched in 2019 to liberate pop idol and singer Britney Spears from the onerous legal conservatorship she’s endured since 2008 following her much-publicized mental breakdown.

Spears, 39, has spent the past 13 years living under a conservatorship — a legal structure in which a person who is deemed unfit to care for themselves cedes their personal, economic and legal decision-making power to others.

The “Free Britney” campaign came to Washington, D.C., on July 14 with a rally at the Lincoln Memorial with the additional aim of sending a signal to lawmakers on Capitol Hill that conservatorship statutes are overly broad and need to be reined in at the national level.

Among those in attendance was Terri Black of Charlotte, N.C., a former accountant turned full-time lawyer for the Center for Estate Administrative Reform. Black believes her father was the victim of a fraudulent conservatorship that robbed him of his freedom before he died in 2015.

On the same day as the rally, Spears appeared remotely in a Los Angeles courtroom seeking to have her father formally charged with “conservatorship abuse.” A judge ruled that the singer can choose her own attorney for the case going forward which some have interpreted as a major step toward freedom.
