We’re back with another weekend round-up! Enjoy one of summer’s last few sultry weekends with concerts at Echostage and the Hamilton. Start whistlin’ Sweet Georgia Brown and take the family to see the Harlem Globetrotters. Munch out at the DC Taco Festival or visit AwesomeCon with the coolest nerds and cosplay in town. End the weekend with a virtual Smithsonian jazz concert.
Party with One of the Country’s Most Popular DJs
Grammy-nominated Kaskade will be appearing at Echostage this Friday night at 9 p.m. The venue is back with EDM shows and Kaskade — named America’s Best DJ by DJ Times in 2011 and 2013 – is a major get. More on his appearance can be found here.
Take Your Parents to See Aztec Sun
It’s rare for a music group to appeal to multiple generations, and Aztec Sun doesn’t disappoint. They’ve been grooving through venues for a decade now with their ‘70s style funk, Motown, jazz and more. Best of all, the band is local! They’ve been named Best Local Original Band by the Washington City Paper. They’re playing Saturday night at the Hamilton at 8 p.m. Tickets can be found here.
Have a Family Day at the Capital One Arena to See the Harlem Globetrotters
Relive your childhood with your own kids and see the Harlem Globetrotters make their magic at the Capital One Arena. Shows now also feature comedians interspersed through the basketball hijinks. Saturday afternoon’s appearance offers regular tickets as well as Celebrity Court Passes, player meet-and-greets and #SQUADZONE, which gets you in as part of the Globetrotters’ hype squad. More on the show can be found here.
Feast at the DC Taco Festival
Head to the Bullpen Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for lots of taco vendors together in one place. The Taco and Margarita Festival will also include shopping vendors selling retail merchandise. Bars and beverage stations with margaritas, ice cold beer, tequila shots, water, soda and more will be available to help wash down your tasty tacos. VIP 21+ tickets get two free tacos, two free margaritas, a t-shirt and VIP area access. More information on the event can be found here.
Nerds Unite! AwesomeCon is Here
The celebration of all things Geek Culture will be held at the D.C. Convention Center this weekend. AwesomeCon brings thousands together to hang out with their favorite stars from comics, movies, TV and more. The ninth annual event features appearances from Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd from Back to the Future, Christina Ricci, William Shatner and many more. AwesomeCon will be keeping to CDC guidelines and health mandates for the ongoing pandemic. More on the show can be found here.
Take in a Virtual Jazz Concert with the Smithsonian
Check out a free concert video streaming this weekend featuring the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. The closing performance of a 2019 Asian tour was recorded at the Tokyo International Forum and featured singer Kurt Elling and artistic director Charlie Young conducting the ensemble. The video is available via YouTube through August 30. More information on the concert can be found here.
