Fatal Shooting at 33rd & M St.

A man was fatally shot in the 3200 block of M Street NW around 6:15 p.m., Jan. 31, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

MPD Chief Robert J. Contee III said it appeared there was “an altercation” between two men and the assailant may be injured. Contee also said there may have been another person with the assailant. He called the shooting “targeted.” Police initially said that a stabbing and a shooting had been reported.

The police chief — who served in Georgetown early in his career and was the Second District commander from 2004 to 2006 — added that the victim was sitting on “a retaining wall,” which is part of the street decking that comprises a streatery, near the intersection of 33rd and M Streets NW. The restaurant which uses that streatery is Good Stuff Eatery. On the opposite corner is Georgetown Cupcake.

The crime happened during rush hour — forcing the closure of part of M Street and Prospect Street to traffic — along with people dining in nearby restaurants, which locked their doors for a time.

No gun has been recovered. No reason for the conflict was given by MPD. The perpetrator — described by police as a black male with a beard, wearing a black jacket — remains at large.

The previous homicide in Georgetown occurred last year — on Feb. 18, 2021, on Thomas Jefferson St. NW. A man from Alexandria was killed in a drugged-related shooting.

The following is from MPD.
