At Journalist Benefit, Ukrainian Ambassador Praises Those Covering War

It was a special evening for journos on July 28 — a fundraiser for Reporters Without Borders (RSF) benefiting journalists covering the war in Ukraine — that featured a speech by Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova, along with moving stories from CNN Senior National Security Correspondent Alex Marquardt and Dr. Robert Montgomery, Chair of the Department of Surgery at NYU Langone Health and Director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, about their recent work in Ukraine. State Department spokesman Ned Price also made poignant remarks in support of journalists.

At the Palisades home of Tammy Haddad, Ambassador Markarova said of reporters risking their lives to cover the war: “You are as brave and as heroic as all the Ukrainians who are fighting.”

According to Clayton Weimers, executive director of RSF’s Washington bureau, eight reporters have been killed and 16 have been injured by gunfire since the Russian offensive began on Feb. 24. Donations will help ensure reporters in the field have bulletproof vests, helmets, solar battery backs, first aid kits and mental health services.

Along with Haddad, co-hosts included Yasmeen Abutaleb, Shane Harris, Damian Paletta, Yamiche Alcindor, David Chavern, Alex Marquardt, Jonathan Martin, Steven Portnoy, Kaitlan Collins, Stephanie Ruhle and Axios Managing Editor Margaret Talev.
