Broadway’s Megan Hilty Discusses Upcoming Performances in Town, Shopping in Georgetown

Broadway star Megan Hilty will be in town this weekend performing “Broadway’s Brightest Lights,” a collection of beloved songs from all the musicals you know and love. Famed for her roles in “Wicked” as Glinda the Good Witch, in “9 to 5: The Musical” as Doralee Rhodes and in “Noises Off” as Brooke Ashton for which she was nominated for a 2016 Tony Award, Hilty also starred as Ivy Lynn on the musical drama series “Smash” and as Liz in the sitcom “Sean Saves the World.”

Hilty will be at The Strathmore tomorrow evening and Capital One Hall Sunday. She spoke to us about the show, where she visits when she’s in D.C. and her plans for 2023.

THE GEORGETOWNER: What are you most excited about for the Broadway’s Brightest Lights shows in the D.C. area? Do you have a favorite song or two you love to sing?

MEGAN HILTY: I always jump at the chance to perform in D.C. because the audiences are incredible. Add in the opportunity to sing with the National Philharmonic and my amazing fellow performers and you have a dream show for me! For this show, I’m really excited about singing Stephen Schwartz’s “Beautiful City.” I can’t wait to hear the orchestra play this gorgeous arrangement.

THE GEORGETOWNER: After a long few years with Covid shutdowns and personal tragedies for many all over the world, how do you think Broadway will help bring back a sense of hope and inspiration?

MH: The magic of theater, in my eyes, has always been the ability to bring people together. By sharing stories about the human condition, we are building community, empathy, and inspiring new visions on how we see and treat the world and each other. Having the powerful art form of live performances taken away from us for so long has only deepened the need for it. I am now, more than ever, extremely grateful every time I step foot in a theater, both as an audience member and as a performer. I think the stories told on stage now have a deeper resonance after our forced Covid hiatus.

THE GEORGETOWNER: What do you like most about visiting the D.C. area? Have you specifically spent time in Georgetown?

MH: I try to take in as much as I can when I visit the D.C.area. My sister Kristen will be with me on this particular trip and we plan on visiting as many monuments and museums as we can. Of course, no trip to D.C. for me would be complete without a little shopping in Georgetown!

THE GEORGETOWNER: Are you excited to be working with Luke and Michael? [Luke Hawkins and Michael Maliakel will be joining Hilty on stage to sing in the Broadway’s Brightest Lights shows.]

MH: I am thrilled to be working with Luke & Michael! They are so incredibly talented and I can’t wait to watch them perform! Luke and I did “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” together several years ago, so I’ve seen first-hand how amazing he is!

THE GEORGETOWNER: Can you tell us about any upcoming projects in 2023?

MH: There are a few things up in the air for me in 2023 but nothing to announce just yet.
