Do you recall how you felt when you first saw Fallingwater, either in person or in a photo? Did the terraces floating above the waterfall take your breath away? Did you feel a deeper appreciation for art or nature? Did the site’s bold design inspire your own life’s journey?
Named the “best all-time work of American architecture” by the American Institute of Architects, Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece in the woods of rural southwest Pennsylvania has inspired the world for 85 years.
Now, we’re at a critical moment in Fallingwater’s history. Many of its major building systems need urgent attention so that the house can continue to inspire generations of dreamers, artists, architects and designers.
When Fallingwater was honored with inscription to the UNESCO World Heritage list in July 2019, we pledged to preserve Fallingwater at the highest standard possible.
In late 2019 – before the pandemic, inflation and other world events – we launched an effort to raise $3 million for the most comprehensive restoration effort at Fallingwater in the past 20 years. However, skyrocketing costs have forced us to increase our fundraising efforts to $5.4 million.
Over the next three years, we will:
- Replace the waterproofing membranes on the flat roofs and terraces
- Repoint and grout the stonework to prevent water infiltration
- Conserve the steel window and door frames
- Repair degraded reinforced concrete

The custom design and unconventional forms of Fallingwater’s roofs, windows and walls make their maintenance and repair more complicated and costly. Roofs require periodic replacement, walls have to be repainted and rotten materials have to be replaced. After all, we’re preserving more than simply a building perched above a waterfall. We’re sustaining an architectural masterpiece – a work of art.
