Mayor Launches Community Survey on Police Chief, Teletownhall Scheduled; Crime Updates


Mayor Seeking Community Input

Want to give input on the search for a permanent Chief of Police for Washington, D.C.?

Following the June 3 retirement of the District’s chief-of-police for the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Robert Contee III, and the appointment of Ashan Benedict as Interim Chief of Police, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser launched a community input survey June 3 and will soon host a local “teletownhall” to gather perspectives from residents on their priorities for the next police chief.

“We are incredibly proud of the Metropolitan Police Department,” said Mayor Bowser. “As a community, we have worked hard to build a police department that represents and reflects our city, and our officers are in our neighborhoods every day connecting with residents and businesses. As we continue our nationwide search for a new police chief, I encourage all Washingtonians to provide their input on the future of public safety in D.C. and the next Chief of Police.”

Per the mayor’s office, residents “can access the community input survey HERE. The survey is designed to take approximately ten minutes for residents to complete. The survey will close on Wednesday, June 14 at noon. On Thursday, June 15 at 6:00 p.m., Mayor Bowser invites residents to participate in the “teletownhall.” Residents can join by dialing 1 (844) 881-1314. Local Crime Updates

Second District detectives requested public assistance in locating a suspect in reference to an “Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Wrench) offense” that occurred on Friday, June 2, 2023, in the 2600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. “At approximately 3:56 p.m., the suspect approached the victim,” and “after a verbal exchange,” the suspect “assaulted the victim with a wrench then fled the scene,” the report said. The suspect was captured by cameras and can be seen in the photos below:

Following that report, MPD announced on Sunday, June 4, that 48-year-old Jogaak Malual, of Northwest, D.C., was arrested and charged with “Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Wrench).”

On May 31, detectives from MPD’s Second District announced an arrest in a “Robbery (Snatch) offense” that occurred on Tuesday, May 30, in the 3500 block of Wisconsin Avenue, NW. “At approximately 10:20 a.m., the suspects approached the victim,” “snatched property” then “fled the scene.” The suspects were apprehended by responding officers,” the report said.”On Tuesday, May 30, 19-year-old Michael Adams, of Northeast, D.C., and a 16-year-old juvenile male, of Northwest, D.C., were arrested and charged with Robbery (Snatch).

Detectives from MPD’s Third District announced June 3 that arrests have been made in reference to an “Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Knife) and Simple Assault offense” that occurred June 3, in the 3300 block of 14th Street, NW. “At approximately 11:30 a.m., the suspects and the victim were involved in a verbal altercation at the listed location. During the altercation, the suspects assaulted the victim. One of the suspects then brandished a knife and stabbed the victim. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The suspects were apprehended and a knife was recovered by responding officers,” the report said. “On Saturday, June 3, 2023, 31-year-old Manuel Medias, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with “Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Knife).” Additionally, 30-year-old Jesus Ramos-Martinez, of Northwest, D.C., and 47-year-old Ventura Elmer, of Woodbridge, Virginia, were arrested and charged with “Simple Assault.”

Detectives from MPD’s Second and Third Districts announced May 31 an arrest in reference to “Burglary Two of Establishment offenses” that occurred in the those districts. The offenses were listed as follows:

Second District

  • On Wednesday, October 19, at approximately 4:25 am, the suspect forcibly gained entry into an establishment in the 2800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Once inside, the suspect took property then fled the scene.
  • On November 15,  at approximately 2:49 a.m., the suspect attempted to gain entry into an establishment in the 1000 block of F Street, NW. The suspect did not obtain any property. The suspect fled the scene.

Third District

  • On Monday, February 20, 2023, at approximately 5:57 am, the suspect forcibly gained entry into an establishment in the 1900 block of 14th Street, NW. Once inside, the suspect took property and then fled the scene.

On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, pursuant to a DC Superior Court Arrest Warrant, 66-year-old Larry Fogle, of Northeast, D.C., was arrested and charged with the above offenses.

On May 31, detectives from the MPD’s Second District requested public assistance in identifying and locating a suspect in reference to a “Robbery (Fear) offense” that occurred on Tuesday, May 30, in the 1900 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. “At approximately 6:30 p.m., the suspect entered an establishment at the listed location,” the report said, “… climbed over the counter, causing the employee to flee. The suspect took money then fled the scene.” The suspect was captured by surveillance cameras and can be seen in the photos below:

On May 31, detectives from MPD’s Sexual Assault Unit requested the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a suspect in reference to a “Misdemeanor Sexual Abuse offense” that occurred on Sunday, May 28  in the 1500 block of 31st Street NW. “At approximately 2:20 p.m., the suspect engaged in unwanted sexual contact with the victim at the listed location. The suspect then fled the scene,” the report said.  The suspect was captured by a camera and can be seen in the photo below:

On May 31, detectives from MPD’s Third District requested public assistance in locating suspects in reference to an “Armed Robbery (Gun) offense” that occurred on May 28, in the 1400 block of Irving Street, NW. “At approximately 6:55 p.m., the suspects approached the victim…. One suspect brandished a handgun and demanded the victim’s property. The victim complied and the suspects fled with the victim’s property,” the report said.  The suspects were captured by a nearby surveillance camera and can be seen in the photos below:

On May 30, detectives from MPD’s Sexual Assault Unit announced an arrest for “Misdemeanor Sexual Abuse offenses” that occurred on Sunday, May 28, in the 1800 block of Columbia Road, NW. “At approximately 7:05 p.m., the suspect approached three separate female victims at the listed location. The suspect engaged in unwanted sexual contact with each victim. The suspect was apprehended by responding officers,” the report said. On May 28, 55-year-old Robert Moore, of Northwest, D.C,. was :arrested and charged with these offenses.”
