•It was a joyous and excited crowd of Georgetowners of all ages who flocked to Book Hill at the corner of Reservoir Rd. and Wisconsin Ave. as word spread that the dozens of of beautiful flowers that members of the Georgetown Garden Club were piling into the corner plaza, were free for the taking. It was a flash flower giveaway to celebrate the club’s 100th anniversary year.
“Our club is dedicated to continually contributing to make Georgetown’s public areas filled with healthy native plants that benefit our residents and guests and helps birds and bumble bees to thrive,” said Lee Child, president of the Georgetown Garden Club. “Most of all, we are about giving back to those who help us. All the money given and raised by Garden Club donors and events are put back into Georgetown projects.”
One of the club’s major focuses has been the Georgetown Public Library on the corner of R St. NW. In September and October, almost all of the club members participated in planting four trees, 35 shrubs and over 65 perennials in the front gardens, along the steps and in the side garden along Wisconsin Ave., making a visible contribution and impact to the popular entrance (where, by the way, voting ballot boxes have been placed for early election voters).
For years, the club has contributed to the development and beautification of what is now widely known in Georgetown as “Book Hill,” the sloping back acre of the library with plantings along the refurbished staircase leading to the small plaza on Reservoir Road (the library sits on the site of the historic Georgetown reservoir on the top of the hill with views down to the Potomic of DC and Virginia).
“Over half of our membership helped with this thank you flash flower giveaway today,” said Christine Spencer, who organized the event, as she gathered pink and yellow flowers and large dried hydrangea blossoms to give away.
Almost all the flowers were donated by Potomac Floral.
The club will be celebrating the end of their 100th anniversary year with a private gala on Dec. 12.
Kudos to The Georgetown Garden Club! Unlike so many garden clubs, whose members strive to perfect their own gardens, The Georgetown Garden Club has always directed its talents to beautifying the public spaces in our community. What a difference they have made! And what a perfectly lovely gift to the community with its “Flash Flowers Giveaway.”
Thank you for 100 years of making Georgetown a more beautiful place to live- I hope you’ll be here for another 100!
