•In (Mamosh): Call Your Mother at 35th & O
Oy vey! Call Your Mother’s future is finally secure. The Board of Zoning Adjustment and Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special exception for zoning purposes, after more than three hearings punted a final decision until last week.
On Nov. 13, the BZA voted 4-1 to grant Call Your Mother the zoning approvals and special exception to continue operating its bagel shop at 3428 O St. NW
Call Your Mother’s owner and CEO Andrew Dana said of the decision for the Georgetown spot, “We think they made the right decision. We’re stoked, and we’re stoked to be there for the next 10 years and continue to be great neighbors.”
The dispute about the continuance of the popular bagel take-out shop in the bright pink building on the corner of O and 35th Streets NW, two blocks from Georgetown University, began more than a year ago. The business needed two new permits — to operate as a corner store and an exemption to continue to sell prepared food at the property. While some nearby residents supported the zoning variances, others argued the place has a garbage problem and is a disturbance to the neighborhood with long lines outside the store and customers eating their food on the steps of nearby homes.
In: Malbon Golf
Another hip brand chose Georgetown. Malbon golf apparel opened Nov. 9 in the former Hobo Bags shop at 1265 Wisconsin Ave. NW.
The company tells us: “Founded in 2017 by culture and golf enthusiasts Stephen and Erica Malbon, Malbon Golf is a lifestyle brand inspired by the game of golf. We provide quality products, tell stories, and invite customers to take part in the community of like-minded thinkers that we have created.”
The store carries jackets, sweatshirts, polos, hats, shorts and shoes, along with bags and gloves. Malbon’s other locations include Soho, Melrose in L.A., Miami and Carmel by the Sea.
In: Generation Tux
Last week, Generation Tux opened at 1517 Wisconsin Ave. NW. The popular online rental brand has moved onto brick-and-mortar reality. When you book an appointment this season, you’ll get a 20-percent discount. There’s style and color consultation. Of course, the Georgetown store carries tuxedos, suits, shirts, vests, ties, accessories, and shoes and socks.
In: Hunter & Huntress
An interior decorating company has arrived at 1665 Wisconsin Ave. NW, where the Bean Counter coffee and sandwich shop used to be.
Coming: Google Store on M
A bricks-and-mortar Google store is planned for 3235 M St. NW in the former Aerie store. The store sells Google hardware products, such as the Pixel smartphone. So far, there are five locations.
Coming: Lobby Bar on 33rd
A tavern — the Lobby Bar, formerly called Creme — is slated for 1660 33rd St. NW, near the spot where 33rd enters Wisconsin Avenue. The business did not provide an opening date. (Not to be confused with the Lobby Lounge at the Ritz-Carlton at 3100 South St. NW, near the waterfront.)
Out: Georgetown Glow 2024 Canceled; Replaced by Jingle
In what would have been its 10th year, Glow is on pause for 2024, as the event planner — the Georgetown Business Improvement District — “explores new partnerships and funding sources,” it says, both for Glow and other events in Georgetown. Instead, Georgetown Jingle, the GBID’s first-ever holiday music event in Georgetown, will take place Dec. 7.
The Georgetown BID described Glow as a “free outdoor public light art experience.” The month-long program was often accompanied by walking tours, a special shopping night, a cocktail crawl and a holiday market.
Its stand-along exhibits, placed around the town, were created by national and international artists, whose commissioned light art works in outdoor locations delighted onlookers.
