•With Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa all about two weeks away, holiday events and performances have ramped up. There’s festive events at Tudor Place and Santa himself comes to Volta Park and Rose Park, in addition to concerts with the National Chamber Ensemble and Cathedral Choral Society.
Dance Your Way into the Holidays with Tudor Place
There’s still time to grab a ticket to this evening’s celebration at Tudor Place called “Tudor Lights: Disco Christmas.” Enjoy the historic home adorned with festive, sparkling disco balls. There will be the opportunity to see how D.C. became the center of disco culture in the 1970s, and even the garden will be transformed into a twinkling, festive outdoor extravaganza. Don’t Miss the Opening of Jane Kell: Skyline at Amy Kaslow Gallery
Artist Jane Kell comes back to Amy Kaslow Gallery in Bethesda with an exhibit called “Skyline.” The 10-piece collection includes lots of morning blues and grays along with sunset oranges and tree-dotted skylines. Kell paints everywhere from Cornwall to Santa Barbara in her exhibit, which opens this evening and runs through February 16. More information on the exhibit can be found here.
Celebrate the Holidays with the National Chamber Ensemble
The National Chamber Ensemble’s holiday concert at Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington on Saturday will bring classical masterpieces and holiday favorites together. Soprano Sharon Christman, along with Outstanding Young Artist Award string competition winners, will perform. There will be a carol sing-along at the end. ‘Tis the Season for Festive Music Events Like Cathedral Choral Society’s
Also this weekend is the Cathedral Choral Society’s “Joy of Christmas” show. There will be classic carols, a 120-voice chorus and a brass quintet, all set against the backdrop of the National Cathedral. The concert has performances Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. You can find tickets here.
Become the Next HGTV Sensation—with Gingerbread That Is
The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, Washington, D.C. is hosting a Sunday Gingerbread House Workshop Sunday. Children are invited to come and get creative with their own gingerbread house, using festive décor like icing, marshmallows and more. There are two separate workshops, one Sunday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and another afternoon session from 3-5 p.m. More information on how to register can be found here.
The Washington National Opera Retells a Classic for Modern Times
The Washington National Opera is presenting “Jungle Book,” a new holiday opera that retells author Rudyard Kipling’s classic story but has Mowgli as a refugee trying to find safety in new surroundings. …Speaking of Retellings of Classics
Imagination Stage is introducing “Petite Rouge: A Cajun Red-Riding Hood” beginning Saturday and running through February 8. The story is a modern retelling of “Little Red-Riding Hood,” talking about Petite Rouge, a red-robed duckling, and her friend TeJean, a cat. The two embark on a journey through the bayou to Grandmere’s house. More information on the show can be found here.
“Visible Vault: Open Collections Storage” Debuts at the National Building Museum
It’s like peeking into someone’s very expensive, full of priceless artifacts, garage or basement. A new exhibit called “Visible Vault: Open Collections Storage” opens Saturday at The National Building Museum. The exhibit shows architectural tools and models from prominent names in the field like I.M. Pei and Frank Gehry. There will also be sections dedicated to the work of artist Raymond Kaskey and the museums extensive architectural toy collection. More information on the exhibit can be found here.
OMG! Santa’s Coming!
This Saturday, Santa will be a very busy man in Georgetown. He’ll make a stop at Volta Park at 10 a.m. for breakfast, where there will be holiday crafts and the opportunity for a photo op too. Washington Fine Properties-NTB Group will be collecting new and gently used coats for Georgetown Ministries during the event. Later, Santa will head to Rose Park’s Holiday Market (2-6 p.m., Santa will be there at 3 p.m.) for crafts, food and more.
