75 percent of Georgetown Crime Occurred in Business District Areas
In 2024, Georgetown, defined by the Police Service Area (PSA) 206 boundary, had a total of 603 reported crimes. Of those, 19 were classified as violent and the other 584 crimes were property crimes, mostly theft. Nearly 75 percent of all crimes in 2024 took place in the business district area. MPD Second District Commander Tatjana Savoy said, “Thefts from businesses continued to be the driver [of crimes in PSA 206] and mountain bikes are deployed along the business corridors.”
By comparison, there were 39 violent crimes and 545 property theft crimes in 2023 in PSA 206. Across the District, total violent crime is down 35%, the lowest level since Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) began reporting approximately 20 years ago. City leaders credit the success to the initiatives, such as the opening of the Real-Time Crime Center and the Camera Connect program that provides real-time data to law enforcement. Since the launch in April 2024, over 41,000 residents and businesses have registered their home security cameras in the Camera Connect program. Learn more at www.mpdc.dc.gov/cameraconnectdc.
Community groups, such as the Citizens Association of Georgetown and the Georgetown Business District, have strengthened their partnership and communication with MPD and raised community awareness about security cameras, leading to higher arrest rates.
