Editorial: Et Tu, WaPo?

The hits just keep on coming. Since the installation of the new regime, we’ve seen mass firings with no warning. Unqualified and dangerous people put in charge of every agency. Extensive thefts of our personal data. Betrayals of our friends and allies. And cruel deportations that would make a Kommandant blush. Every day, another blow.

But this time, the threat is coming from the most unlikely source. The house that  Woodward and Bernstein, Katharine Graham, Ben Bradlee built along with hundreds of journalists and editors that countless Washingtonians and readers around the world have depended on for a clear read and analysis of the news.

Jeff Bezos has decided to jettison the Post’s longtime tradition of “free speech” and diverse opinions in favor and support of “personal liberties and free markets.” In other words, those benefitting the president and his fellow broligarchs. For readers looking for “viewpoints opposing those pillars,” he suggests they go elsewhere.

If that’s his mission, why not buy a business journal and beef up its libertarian leanings? Or start an exorbitantly priced newsletter for like-minded capitalists? But compromising an institution’s principles and dismissing loyal readers to protect your business interests is a truly cynical and sinister choice.

Many of us have dropped our subscriptions to WaPo and Amazon Prime. We no longer shop at Whole Foods or the Amazon marketplace. Others have left Facebook and Instagram for more broadminded spaces like BlueSky and Substack. As for us, we will continue to cover the news without fear or favor and help you make sense of the unprecedented challenges ahead.

Absolute biased baloney article! Bezos 1000% supports free speech, as does Elon Musk. It’s the whole point of newspapers and X. Duh! Libtards writing your articles need to be a bit more sophisticated in their amatuerish analyses. Free Markets and Free Speech sound good to me! The Post was a left-wing liberal rag with dwindling subscriptions and readers – the owners had to do something. You lost the election – more than 50% of Americans disagree with you and your liberal drivel in this Georgetowner rag. Embarrassing bias. Support PUBLIC SAFETY and not sanctuary (from the law) cities, free speech, peace and prosperity like President Trump and his entire Administration and maybe Georgetown will come back from the vacant shop fronts and tenement crime neighborhood it has become.
