An Art Salon at the Home of Artist Kelly Dinglasan Minton
A star-studded art salon was hosted on May 29 by visual artist Kelly Dinglasan Minton and her husband Joel Minton at their elegant Kalorama home. The walls were hung with Kelly Minton’s striking line paintings, pastel-colored canvases with images of lush spring flowers and of aquiline dancers from Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company and American Ballet Theater.
Kelly Minton’s art salon was the confluence of an exuberant audience of both art and dance enthusiasts, who were invited to support two of her favorite arts organizations, Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company, and TransformerDC. On this perfect spring evening, over 100 of Washington’s arts elite mixed and mingled over libations and hors d’oeuvres. The event flowed seamlessly through the home, as well as onto the tranquil patio. Guests included Marcia and Eric Hilton, Deputy Director of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities David Markey, Carole Feld and David Levy, Jameson Freeman, president of the Arts Club of Washington and Kristen Lund. Everyone was graciously invited to explore the many floors of the Minton’s recently renovated residence; including Kelly Minton’s charming, light-filled art studio that crowns the top floor.
In Kelly Minton’s welcome remarks, she dedicated the evening to Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) Heritage Month. Minton is Filipina American and Burgess is Korean American.
Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company is Washington, DC’s premier modern dance company and specializes in both theater and museum presentations. The five dancers from the company maneuvered the living room gallery space artfully. They performed works by Michio Itō (1892-1961) – the first Asian American choreographer and ended with two of Burgess’s breathtaking dances. The company received resounding applause. Kelly Minton has a talent for not only art making, but also for connecting our arts community and its patrons; she is a DC nexus.
This salon was part of Transformer’s annual Collector’s View series which provides audience participants with intimate, insider perspectives on the motivations, interests and passions of art collector hosts, special views of the artwork they collect and reflections on their relationship with artists. Transformer is dedicated to connecting and serving a diversity of emerging artists and arts leaders. This was the last of five Collector’s View events offered by Transformer this season that were hosted in prominent artists’ homes. What was special about this final offering was the unique collaboration that Kelly Dinglasan Minton brought together.
