Humane Rescue Alliance Marks 155 Years at Annual Bark Ball

The Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) hosted its 38th Annual Bark Ball on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the Washington Hilton, drawing hundreds of supporters and their canine companions for the black-tie gala.

This year’s event carried added significance as HRA celebrated its 155th anniversary. Themed “Through the Decades,” the gala highlighted the organization’s longstanding role in animal rescue and advocacy across the Washington, D.C. region.

Councilmember Robert White was recognized during the evening for championing Roscoe’s Law, landmark legislation named after his late rescue dog. The bill, which passed with unanimous support from the D.C. Council earlier this year, ensures residents with pets will have greater access to safe and affordable housing by eliminating restrictive fees and breed-based barriers.

“One in 10 D.C. residents lack stable housing,” White said. “Our pets, like my family’s sweet pit bull mix Roscoe, who we had for 14 years, are our family. However, often exorbitant pet fees and breed restrictions make housing unaffordable for people. As chair of the Housing Committee, I take seriously my role to unlock more affordable housing for residents, and this bill breaks down real barriers residents have faced.”

Guests enjoyed a gourmet vegan dinner, while dogs in formal attire mingled alongside their owners. The evening also featured live entertainment and a spirited live auction. Proceeds from the event support HRA’s life-saving programs and services, making the Bark Ball the organization’s largest annual fundraiser.

Founded in 1870, HRA has grown into one of the nation’s oldest and most comprehensive animal welfare organizations. The milestone anniversary offered guests an opportunity to reflect on the group’s history while contributing to its future efforts to protect and care for animals in need.
