One of Georgetown’s most iconic homes has officially found its next owner. The historic Prospect House, located at 3508 Prospect Street NW, recently sold for $9.827 million, making it one of the biggest single-family sales in D.C. this year.
Built between 1787 and 1793 high above the Potomac River, Prospect House is often recognized as one of the oldest and easily one of the most beautiful homes in Washington, D.C. The red-brick Georgian-Federal style home sits on almost half an acre of formal English gardens, complete with a rare octagonal watch tower that a former owner constructed to watch his boats sailing into Georgetown Harbor.
Inside, the 9,000+ square foot residence feels both grand and welcoming. The main level features 12-foot ceilings, a formal entrance hall, a double parlor living room with twin Adams fireplaces, a banquet-sized dining room with a fireplace and river views, a gallery hall, an ample-sized eat-in kitchen, a powder room and a veranda. Upstairs are seven bedrooms, a sitting room and five full baths. The lower level includes a library which is open to the garden, a home office, an 8th bedroom and a full bath. A 41-foot swimming pool, a garage and additional parking for three cars complete the exceptional offering.
Over its 235-year history, Prospect House has hosted an impressive list of guests. From Presidents Washington and Adam to the Marquis de Lafayette and poet Robert Frost. Throughout the years, the home had many renowned owners including James V. Forrestal, the first Secretary of Defense. During the Truman era, it even served as the White House Guest House for visiting dignitaries.
The sale was represented by Kim Gibson and Eileen McGrath of Washington Fine Properties.
Prospect House is more than a home. It is a landmark that continues to tell D.C.’s story.
