The Potomack Company Auctions Estate of Georgetowner Jane Stanton Hitchcock

The late Jane Stanton Hitchcock, who died last summer, was like many Georgetowners—she split time between her homes in New York City and Georgetown. She was also a bestselling mystery author, with many of her books witty takes on the glamorous set she often spent time with in Washington, D.C., and New York.

Hitchcock, who was married to the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post journalist Jim Hoagland (who The Georgetowner interviewed in the summer of 2023), was good friends with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and gave a reading at the former first lady’s funeral in 1994. Hitchcock bonded with Onassis over their mutual writing talents. It is said that Hitchcock wrote a lot of her books, “Trick of the Eye” and “The Witch’s Hammer,” at Onassis’s Martha’s Vineyard home.

Hitchcock was also an avid poker player, winning multiple championships.

Her estate includes lots of intriguing pieces, including a John Wootton oil on canvas depicting King George I’s Arabian “Horn” horse, standing by a groom. It’s estimated at $80,000-$120,000. There’s also a carved jade and diamond pendant/brooch estimated to be worth $8,000-$12,000. Other objects and prints show Hitchcock’s love of animals, especially dogs and birds. There’s a portrait of her dog Chloe, whom Hitchcock nicknamed “The Wizard of Odd.” The painting is by Christine Merrill, a local animal portraitist.
