Weekend Roundup: Get a Clue at the National Theatre


We’re rounding out January with lots to do from the National Theatre to National Portrait Gallery and more. Get out and about to a cozy indoor location for some winter fun around town. Enjoy!

Clue Heads to the National Theatre
This weekend only, check out the popular “Clue” stage show. A gorgeous mansion, murder and of course, a mystery are on hand for this 80-minute show with no intermission. You’ll get to tackle the usual questions like was it Colonel Mustard in the library with a knife, or Mrs. Peacock in the study? If you were a fan of the original movie, you’ll love this show at the National Theatre. More information can be found here.

Now Through March 15: ‘Freedom & Resistance: An Exhibition Inspired by the 1619 Project’

D.C. Public Library is presenting a new exhibit, “Freedom and Resistance: An Exhibition Inspired by The 1619 Project,’ in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month. The exhibit will feature three sections that are created with educators from The Pulitzer Center, Nikole Hannah-Jones, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and editors from The New York Times Magazine. While exploring the exhibit, visitors can see connections between Black American experiences and ideals of American freedom. More information can be found here.

Squash on Fire Open is This Weekend

The Squash on Fire Open begins tomorrow and runs through Sunday. Expect to see 48 players from 17 countries competing in a fast-paced event. The sixth annual event will include eight competitors ranked in the top 20 globally. The Squash on Fire Open features a $100,000 prize purse and has previously launched the careers of elite squash players. More information can be found here.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Twirls into the Warner Theatre

The historic Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will be at the Warner this weekend. The 11-performance engagement will include “The Holy Blues” by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar in collaboration with Samantha Figgins and Chalvar Monteiro, “Song of the Anchorite” by Jamar Roberts, “Revelations” by Alvin Ailey and more. Check Out the Riveting “Octet” at Studio Theatre

Eight people meet in a church basement locking their phones in a box, and well, as they say, the rest is history. “Octet” asks a big question, especially as of late, to escape our screens, how we can choose to be more present with each other. The a cappella chamber musical is from Dave Malloy. More information can be found here.

See ‘The Outwin: American Portraiture Today’ at The National Portrait Gallery

A new exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery opened last week and runs through August. It includes 34 portraits by 35 artists in mediums from painting, photography and sculpture. The artists were chosen from over 3,000 submissions from an anonymous open call. More information on the exhibit can be found here. 

Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes

The weather outside may be frightful, but there’s always hockey! The Washington Capitals are playing the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday at 5 p.m. and it’s Margaritaville night. Ocean City Tourism will be sponsoring the theme night, in which all tickets purchased through this special offer will include an Alexander Ovechkin Tropical Mug.
