History and Real Estate at Q&A Cafe

Georgetown journalist Carol Joynt and real estate agent Jamie Peva took a trip down memory lane on Feb. 3 at the George Town Club. It was all part of the monthly Q&A café run by Joynt, and the Joseph Room at the club was overflowing with eager lunch attendees, also happy to get out of the house during this seeming endless winter freeze.
Peva recalled that his first job in Georgetown was at Big Wheels bicycle shop. He later worked for Sam Pardoe and then went on to meet his mentor Michael Sullivan. Peva remains with Washington Fine Properties and gave a shoutout to Nancy Taylor Bubes.
These days, Peva has become something of a social media star, thanks to his daughter Violet’s work with him on Instagram. His daughter’s advice to him during the video recordings was to just “be real.” They scored a cover story in The Georgetowner last year — along with lots of likes online.
Still, Peva — who has lived in 11 homes in Georgetown over the years — maintains he just likes to sell houses in Georgetown, adding “it’s a place where you don’t have to get in your car and drive.” He is often seen on a bicycle riding around the village.
And who knew that Peva had at one point listed Joynt’s house for sale?
Joynt and Peva continued along telling tales of manhole covers’ exploding, the Pleasure Chest, a naughty lingerie shop near the C&O Canal, and top federal government types living in town with their security SUVs nearby.
Volta Park was discussed as having been a cemetery for many years before being closed, with most bodies disinterred. The lesson being that real estate agents must be aware there might human remains lurking around somewhere under the backyard of the home for sale.
They could have gone on, of course. After the applause, Joynt presented Peva with a rare book about Georgetown history … of course.
The next Q&A Cafe will be held 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m, Tuesday, March 31, with Kara Swisher — “Tech, Power & the Pursuit of Living Longer” — $35 per person; 202-333-9330.
