With the first full weekend of Women’s History Month brings lots of women-focused events, including a salon at L’Enfant Gallery, a Woman’s Leadership Summit at Mount Vernon, the HerStory 5K downtown and much more.
Check Out InSeries’ ‘Passion Plays’

Beginning Friday and running through March 29 is a festival presented by InSeries called “Passion Plays.” There will be three original works inspired by a “passion experience,” transcendence through suffering. First up is “Only the Air,” which runs this weekend at Dupont Underground. In the performance, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion arias will interlaced with new libretto featuring poetic translations by D.C. poet Shana Oshiro. More information can be found here.
Mount Vernon Presents the First Women’s Leadership Summit

Doris Kearns Goodwin, Anne Applebaum, Judy Woodruff and others are at Mount Vernon now through Friday for the inaugural Women’s Leadership Summit. Noteworthy Friday events include a 9:30 a.m. talk called “The Storytellers: Women Who Write, Make, and Preserve History” with Anne Applebaum in conversation with Lindsay Chervinsky, executive director of the George Washington Presidential Library. There will also be a closing chat with Judy Woodruff on “Preserving Legacy, Inspiring Change.” More information on the summit can be found here.
Round House Theatre Presents ‘Noise in the Line’ and ‘Marble Rooftop’

As part of the Bonnie Hammerschlag National Capital New Play Festival is “Noise in the Line,” which plays Thursday and Saturday. The play tells the story of Graham, who is fighting Stage IV cancer. He copes by listening to a podcast narrated by Blaine and Graham’s sister. Graham ends up beating the cancer, but his wife Thora and he struggle to move on from the stress and trauma of his time in the hospital. More information on how to get tickets can be found here.
There’s also “Marble Rooftop,” with performances Friday and Sunday. The play is about a dance team who attends a bonding sleepover while navigating questionable friendships and power imbalances. Alcohol flows freely, with surprising revelations as the night progresses. The play explores the ever-complicated time that is teenage girlhood. More information on tickets can be found here.
Join L’Enfant Gallery for an International Women’s Day Salon

On Saturday evening at L’Enfant Gallery from 7:30-9:30 p.m., enjoy an International Women’s Day Salon featuring a discussion called “Unveiled Legacies: Black Burlesque Performance as a Living Archive.” There will be performances from award winning Black entertainers, including a jazz band led by saxophonist extraordinaire Herb Scott with dance performances and talks by Bebe Bardeaux, Gigi Holliday and more. Celebration International Women’s Day at The National Museum of Women in the Arts

International Women’s Day begins at the NMWA with a 9 a.m. yoga class surrounded by the museum’s artwork. The class, which is for all levels, will feature seated, supine and standing poses. Participants should bring a yoga mat. The event is sold out, but a small number of walk-up tickets will be available for purchase the day of the event. More information here.
Also this weekend at the NMWA is a film screening of “Tamara de Lempicka & the Art of Survival,” a documentary that chronicles the life of one of the most unconventional artists of the 20th century who is best known for her Art Deco portraits. The Classical Arts Society Introduces Classical Productions to New Generations

Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at The Arts Club of Washington, the Classical Arts Society is presenting “Affection of Amadeus” with violinist Julia Angelov. Angelov will be celebrating the joy and innocence of Mozart’s violin sonatas and the stoic romanticism of Grieg. There will be hors d’oeuvres and an open wine bar included with admission. The National Philharmonic Is at Strathmore this Weekend

Enjoy a program celebrating French masters Ravel, Debussy and Tailleferre at The Music Center at Strathmore with the National Philharmonic on Saturday. Andrew Grams will conduct, and Bridget Kibbey will be on harp. The program spotlights Germaine Taillefere, the only female member of the French composers’ collective Les Six. The 34th Annual Strathmore Juried Exhibition begins this weekend in the Mansion Galleries. The exhibit was chosen to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Strathmore’s afternoon tea program and is juried by woodworker Darryl Patterson and gallerist Adah Rose Bitterbaum. The event invites artists to explore traditions and the cultural, historical and emotional aspects of tea. More information can be found here.
Lace Up Your Sneakers: The HerStory 5K Is This Weekend
Residents of all ages are invited to participate in the 5th annual HerStory 5K on Saturday at 10 a.m. (registration begins at 8 a.m.). The race honors the history making women of D.C. and is family friendly. More information on the 5K can be found here.
Vital Voices is Hosting Mentoring Walks on Saturday

In honor of International Women’s Day, Vital Voices is hosting their 19th Annual Global Mentoring Walks. There will be two walks this year, one in D.C. at the organization’s Global Headquarters and one in Georgetown. The Georgetown walk will also include shopping at neighborhood women-owned businesses, and a portion of sales will support Vital Voices. The Georgetown Walk begins at 1 p.m. at City Tavern.
