‘Wild Apples’ by Bruce Kurland

This oil painting by Bruce Kurland (1938-2013) — signed, titled and dated 1975 on the reverse — sold for more than twice its high estimate. Kurland, who studied at New York’s National Academy of Design and Art Students League, was known for miniaturized, realistic, somewhat dreamy still lifes, such as this Chardin-like depiction of apples.

‘Frosty Morning’ by Guy Rose

Sold for: $184,150
Guy Rose (1867-1925), an American Impressionist who was a friend and protégé of Claude Monet, painted this oil during the last of his many trips to Giverny, France, sometime between 1908 and 1912. Signed at lower right and mounted in a Stanford White-designed gilt frame, it depicts pollarded trees overhanging the Epte River, a tributary of the Seine.

Winter Bears by Jeff Koons
This sculpture of a cartoonish polar bear couple, fabricated in polychromed wood, is from a 1988 edition of three, plus artist’s proof, by Jeff Koons (b. 1955), whose work is inspired by pop culture and everyday objects. Part of an auction titled “Temple of Style: The Barbara Jakobson Collection,” the piece sold for more than $2 million over the high estimate.

Gene Hackman: A Group of ‘Crimson Tide’ Material
Sold for: $10,240
A recent Bonhams auction of entertainment memorabilia featured “Crimson Tide”-related material from the estate of Gene Hackman, who played the commanding officer of a nuclear submarine in the 1995 film. The lot included an inscribed wool and leather jacket, a script in an embossed leather binder, a Hackman photograph and two VHS copies of Trailer #2.

Part of a Palm Beach jewelry and luxury handbags auction, this 17-inch necklace with detachable pendant drops sold for several thousand dollars over its high estimate of $6,000. The 18-karat white gold piece, from the collection of Maureen Dwyer Smith, is set with aquamarines, sapphires, tourmalines, round diamonds and round brown diamonds.
