Gunman Killed Near White House Checkpoint; Gunfire Damages Buildings 10 Blocks From Georgetown

A gunman was killed and a bystander seriously injured following a shooting at a White House security checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW on Saturday, May 23 — roughly 10 blocks from Georgetown.

The gunman, identified as Nasire Best, died at the scene, according to authorities. Reports said Best had previous encounters with the U.S. Secret Service.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Georgetowner photographer Bill Starrels captured images showing damage to nearby buildings, including shattered bullet-resistant glass at the White House Visitor Center on the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

Additional photographs show bullet holes and other damage to the facade of 1700 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, located approximately 350 feet from the checkpoint. A building engineer at the property said the building was struck about 10 times by gunfire.
