To honor millions, and the nation on its 250th birthday, United Services Automobile Association has erected the National Military Monument — through Nov. 12 — in front of the Lincoln Memorial, displaying the names of millions of American veterans.
The temporary exhibit features two 18-feet-tall stone structures that look like billowing American flags. Inside the stripes of the flags are hundreds of LED screens that display the names of 41 million veterans. Visitors can select the names of family members who served, then take photographs of those individuals’ records on a larger screen. Volunteers are at hand to assist in pulling up selections.
USAA says: “250 years ago, a new nation was born from the belief that freedom and opportunity belonged to the people. And, if necessary, was worth fighting for. Since then, more than 41 million men and women have answered the call to defend our freedom. This monument honors them. … the National Military Monument is a living tribute to the generations of military members whose service and sacrifice made this historic milestone possible for our country.
“We’ve searched through numerous sources and historic records for the names of service members who fought for our country. Located on the Lincoln Memorial Plaza, this one-of-a-kind monument will honor the commitment of those who served and stand as a meaningful reminder of their service.”
USAA continued: “No single comprehensive record of every U.S. service member exists that is available to the public. USAA has combined multiple public records and data sources to commemorate as many service members as possible, honoring and remembering their commitment to the United States.
“Founded in 1922 by military officers, USAA has served the military community for more than a century. This monument is presented as an expression of gratitude, duty and enduring commitment to those who have worn the uniform, and to the families who have served alongside them.”
