Dine Well and Do Good: Blue Duck Tavern Supports Nepal Relief

Guests can enjoy an evening at the Michelin-recognized restaurant Blue Duck Tavern, 1201 24th St. NW, while helping Mercy Corps deliver urgently needed assistance to families in Nepal.

A memorable dinner can make a meaningful difference on Thursday, Sept. 10, when Blue Duck Tavern invites Georgetowners and others to dine out in support of communities affected by the catastrophic flooding in Nepal.

The acclaimed restaurant at Park Hyatt Washington will donate 10 percent of its net food and beverage sales from that evening’s dinner service to Mercy Corps.

It is an opportunity to enjoy Blue Duck Tavern’s American cuisine while contributing to an important cause — simply by gathering around the table with friends, family or colleagues.

Blue Duck Tavern is known for its seasonal, locally sourced menu, open kitchen and wood-burning oven. Current dinner offerings include dry-aged beef tenderloin, pasture-raised chicken, jumbo lump crab cakes, house-made garganelli and the restaurant’s signature whole roasted duck.

Behind the welcoming evening is an urgent need. On Aug. 26, a glacier collapse near the Nepal-China border sent a destructive surge of water, ice, rock and mud through Himalayan communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors.

Entire settlements were swept away, with homes, bridges, roads, health facilities and communications systems destroyed. Thousands of families have been displaced and many communities remain difficult for rescue and relief teams to reach.

Mercy Corps, which has worked in Nepal since 2005, is delivering food, clean drinking water, sanitation supplies, clothing, temporary shelter and other emergency assistance. The organization will also remain involved as affected communities begin the longer process of recovery and rebuilding.

By choosing Blue Duck Tavern for dinner on Sept. 10, guests will help support that work without adding anything extra to their checks. The restaurant itself will contribute 10 percent of its net dinner sales.

Dinner is served from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Given the special nature of the evening, advance reservations are encouraged and may be made through Blue Duck Tavern’s website.

It is a simple and enjoyable way to help: share an exceptional meal, spend time with people you care about and allow part of the evening’s proceeds to reach families facing tremendous hardship.

More Ways to Help Nepal

Those who cannot attend the dinner — or who would like to do more — can contribute directly to organizations providing assistance in Nepal, such as:

Mercy Corps****: Supporting emergency food, clean water, sanitation, clothing, shelter and longer-term recovery.

UNICEF****: Providing children and families with safe water, health and nutrition services, hygiene supplies, education assistance and protection.

American Red Cross****: Working with the Nepal Red Cross Society to provide shelter, food, relief supplies and health services.

Save the Children****: Supplying tents, blankets, food, hygiene kits, mosquito nets, water purifiers and child-focused assistance.

World Central Kitchen****: Working with local partners and community kitchens to provide freshly prepared meals to survivors and emergency responders.

Project HOPE****: Mobilizing health and humanitarian assistance where the disaster has disrupted medical care, clean water and essential services.

Monetary gifts are generally the quickest and most flexible way to assist after an international disaster. Donors should contribute through an organization’s official website and check whether their employers will match charitable gifts.
