STC Kicks Off Its Season With a Coup — Straight From London’s West End

By Catherine Meale

The performances delight, the sets enchant, the costumes captivate and the music — well, what would you expect from a play inspired by the real-life meeting between Johann Sebastian Bach and Frederick the Great of Prussia?

Brian Cox of “Succession” plays the bristly musical genius with satisfying sturm und drang, as one might expect from the actor whose turn as Logan Roy won a Golden Globe.

The luxuriant production by Trevor Nunn — director of “Cats,” “Starlight Express” and every one of Shakespeare’s 37 plays) — is full of thoughtful details to charm the senses.

For music lovers, WETA Classical and STC will collaborate for a pre-show discussion of the music and a post-show discussion of the play on Friday, Oct. 2. Look for our full review in the next issue of The Georgetowner.
