Disney characters visited the Georgetown Public Library on R Street Feb. 9 to join the Toddler Art & Stories reading program for children. Children and their families listened to Disney classic stories, sing songs and worked on an art project. Special guests from “Disney On Ice presents Treasure Trove,” shared “laughs, excitement and reminded the children that love is the greatest magic of all,” they said, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

“Get tangled up in Disney’s 50th animated feature with Rapunzel and Flynn and enter the worlds of your other favorite Disney princesses — Tiana, Cinderella, Jasmine, Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Mulan and, of course, the one who started it all, Snow White,” announces “Disney On Ice presents Treasure Trove,” presented by Stonyfield YoKids Organic Yogurt and produced by Feld Entertainment. The joyful list on skates seems endless. There are Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and Captain Hook and his pirates; Simba, Nala, Pumbaa and Timon; Alice and the
Mad Hatter with the Queen of Hearts’ Army of Cards; Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

The Washington Area Concierge Association set sail for “WACA on the Wild Side,” the annual fundraising gala hosted by Washington tourism and hospitality professionals to benefit the Homeless Children’s Playtime Project, Les Clefs d’Or Foundation and the John B. Campbell Hospitality Scholarship. It was an elegant adventure Oct. 5 onboard the Odyssey Washington.

The 2015 D.C. Chamber of Commerce’s Choice Awards and Gala, drew more than 1,000 of Washington’s dignitaries, national political figures, corporate citizens and business owners to celebrate the year’s business and civic successes together at the Marriott Marquis Hotel Oct. 30. PEPCO held the title as the event sponsor, and awards were presented to Joe Rigby, chairman of the board of director as well as president and CEO of Pepco Holdings, Comcast, George Washington University, Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, Marcella A. Jones, and the Washington Area Community Investment Fund. The award show was emceed by Fox5 News-WTTG meteorologist Tucker Barnes and Mary Abbajay of Careerstone Group. Scott LoBaido, known as “The Patriot Artist,” finished painting his 50th flag at the American Legion in Arlington Aug. 20. It was his final flag mural of his six-month, 50-state 2015 “Painting Flags Across America Tour.” LoBaido’s artwork, a tribute to veterans, is now along the front wall of American Legion Post #139, easily seen from Washington Boulevard, where it was formally dedicated during an Aug. 20 ceremony.

It was a perfect timing, too, because someone had stolen the U.S. flag from the pole in front of the American Legion building a few nights before.

LoBaido, who considers the American flag “the greatest piece of artwork ever created,” said he deliberately selected Arlington as the location for his final rendition of the Stars & Stripes because of its proximity to Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknowns.

“Choosing Arlington for the ‘End of Tour Dedication Ceremony’ is my way of honoring all veterans—the millions who have defended her in the past, as well as the thousands who continue to defend her today,” LoBaido said.

The artist began his 24,000-mile journey in Feb. 20 in Fayetteville, N.C., and estimated that he “used 1,200 gallons of paint and went through 500 paint rollers and 500 paint brushes and 25 pairs of jeans and white T-shirts . . . and made 50,000 new friends.”

Logistics for the tour were handled by retired Special Forces Medic, Art Salisbury, and it was sponsored by the Home Depot Foundation, Behr Paint, CitiQuiet Windows and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. [gallery ids="102300,127580,127585,127574" nav="thumbs"]

The 2015 Citi Open, held at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center at Rock Creek Park from Aug. 3 to Aug. 9, enjoyed glorious weather and offered up enjoyable and memorable matches. It was the 47th edition for the men’s competitions and the fifth edition for the women’s competitions, with Kei Nishikori (Japan) and Sloane Stephens (U.S.A.), winning respectively.
