Romney and Ryan Hit the Stump in Manassas (photos)

August 16, 2012

Presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) were greeted by an overflow crowd of supporters at a GOP rally at the Harris Pavilion in Manassas, Va., on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 11. Romney’s stop in Manassas was part of a bus tour of battleground states that started in Norfolk earlier in the morning when Romney introduced Ryan as his running mate.

The candidates spoke of change, turning around the economy and removing the hindrance of “Obamacare” on small businesses. Local law enforcement estimated the number that showed up for the rally to be as high as 10,000, and it was clear that many in the well-mannered crowd had to be turned away from the small Harris Pavillion. Wait times to go through security varied from two to three hours. The event was scheduled for 3:45 p.m., but the candidates didn’t speak until after 5 p.m. Also speaking at the rally were Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, Senatorial candidate and former governor George Allen, Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) and Del. Barbara Comstock.

Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia routed top-seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia to take the women’s crown 6-1 6-1.

The 2012 Citi Open ATP World Tour 500 Level men’s event is recognized as one of the top 20 ATP events in the world offering nearly $1.5M in prize money. Native American Olympic Athletes Saluted in exhibition at Indian Museum

August 9, 2012

As the 2012 Olympics begin in London, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian has opened a special exhibit, “Best in the World: Native Athletes in the Olympics,” featuring Native-American athletes who have provided some of the most dramatic moments in Olympic history. It also happens to be the 100th anniversary of the 1912 Olympics in which Jim Thorpe (Sac and Fox ) won both the pentathlon and the decathlon (a feat not since accomplished), Duke Kahanamoku (Native Hawaiian) won the 100-meter freestyle, Andrew Sockalexis (Penobscot) placed fourth in the marathon and Lewis Tewanima (Hopi) won the silver medal and set an American record for the 10,000-meter competition. Tewanima’s record stood for more than 50 years until another American Indian, Billy Mills (Oglala Lakota), won Gold in Tokyo in 1964. Among the items on display are two gold medals won by Thorpe and the gold medal won by Mills. The exhibit is scheduled to run through Sept. 3. At Fourth Street and Independence Avenue, SW, the museum is located on the National Mall between the National Air & Space Museum and the U.S. Capitol.
