Woodblock printmaking is one of the oldest and most low-tech of the printmaking processes. Blocks of wood are first carved and then rolled with ink. Finally the inked impression is transferred to paper by applying pressure, either by hand or with the use of a printing press. Printmaker Amy Guadagnoli creates all of her multicolor woodblock prints by hand, using the back of a wooden spoon for printing. Building up her images slowly, she creates rich results through layering diverse patterns and shapes in ink.
In this demonstration, Guadagnoli will show how she adds a layer of color to her prints using a reductive, multiblock carving and printing method. She will also discuss additional techniques for adding color to relief prints, with emphasis on methods suited for artists who print without the use of a press
