Profs & Pints: The Long View on Venezuela

May 24, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm UTC+0

$2 – $12

Profs and Pints presents: “The Long View on Venezuela,” with Fulton Armstrong, research fellow at American University’s center for Latin American studies and former National Intelligence Officer for Latin America and adviser to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Since January, the United States and other nations have been seeking to oust Venezuelan President Maduro and replace him with National Assembly President Juan Guaidó. So far, however, such efforts have failed to deliver hoped-for democracy, stability, and prosperity. Instead, Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis has worsened, its political tensions remain high, and its prospects continue to seem dismal.

What happened, and why? Where does the mess go from here? What will it mean for the U.S.?

Get answers to such questions from Fulton Armstrong, who spent 30 years following Latin American affairs in various government positions and continues to stay on top of the situation in Venezuela as a scholar at American University.

He’ll discuss the current situation, its underlying causes, and scenarios for the future. Among the questions he will tackle: Might UN-sponsored negotiations work? Can an old political center reemerge in Venezuela and summon Maduro and Guaidó to compromise? Is Washington helping, or hurting, the cause with its pledges to take down the other two governments in what it calls the “Troika of Tyranny,” Cuba and Nicaragua?

The “Monroe Doctrine,” through which the United States in the 19th century claimed the right to intervene in Latin America and keep others out, is front and center in the Administration’s policy. Is Venezuela a means of establishing that primacy anew?

Armstrong will take stock of developments up to the minutes before the talk, and leave you with a much better understanding of where Venezuela and our relationship with it are headed. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15. Save $2 with student ID. Time listed is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please arrive in plenty of time to place any order and be seated and settled before the talk begins.)
