With both moments of impressive grandeur and breathtaking beauty, Rachmaninoff’s writing for a cappella chorus is unmatched. The lesser known of Rachmaninoff’s two large-scale a cappella works, his Liturgy, uses the text of the primary worship service of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The liturgy is named for John, an archbishop of Constantinople, who was renowned as an orator in favor of almsgiving and against the abuse of wealth.
