•An exhibition of 12 artists, aptly titled “Ward 12,” will run through Saturday, Dec. 17, at Halcyon House in Georgetown. The new Studio Arts Program is a project of S&R Foundation, which runs Halcyon Incubator and other programs.
At a Dec. 7 preview, S&R Foundation CEO Sachiko Kuno welcomed guests to the special arts presentation. If Washington, D.C., is now a restaurant capital, said S&R COO Kate Goodall, why not an arts capital as well?
“Ward 12” is the culmination of creative work by 12 D.C. artists who were awarded studio space in the historic Fillmore School, a former public school on 35th Street, built in 1893 and later used by the Corcoran College of Art. These artists, S&R says, “were selected for the powerful message of their artistic work, and their potential to make future contributions to the artistic and cultural fabric of Washington, D.C. Dedicated studio space was provided at the Fillmore School in order for each artist to pursue their creative work freely, in any manner that they choose. ”
Beginning in the fall of 2017, the foundation says, it “plans to inaugurate an innovative artist fellowship program to support emerging artists who are particularly engaged in the field of social practice or work to create social change through art. . . . Artists accepted into this program will receive six months of free studio space to pursue advanced independent study and individual practice, and will participate in a public exhibition sponsored by S&R Foundation.”
This month’s exhibition displays works, screenings and performances. The artists are Eames Armstrong, Monica Jahan Bose, Marion Colomer, Ayana Zaire Cotton, Reilly Dowd, Anna Kaminski, Konshens the MC, Mattias Kraemer, Erik Moe, Daniel Pheonix Singh, Anna Tsouhlarakis and Grethe Wittrock.
