The finest work of streamlined, Art Moderne architecture in Washington, and one of the greatest such buildings anywhere in the United States, the Hecht Company Warehouse — originally built in 1937 and expanded in 1948 — was the central warehouse for the Hecht Company Department Stores. The six-story building features alternating bands of brick and glass blocks that culminate in a 12-point star-shaped corner cupola that is illuminated at night. Douglas Development purchased the building in 2011 and is currently redeveloping it as a mixed-use retail and residential complex.
