Joseph Hassett Talks ‘Ulysses’ at Founding Friends

PEN/Faulkner’s Founding Friends gathered at the home of Aviva Kempner to hear Joseph Hassett talk about his book, “The Ulysses Trials: Beauty and Truth Meet the Law,” at a Nov. 17 luncheon co-hosted by Elizabeth Berry, Barry Karas and Michael Singer. A lawyer and writer, Hassett’s latest work chronicles how the publishers of James Joyce’s “Ulysses” were brought to trial and convicted of obscenity in the U.S. in 1921. The work adds not only to the understanding of Joyce but also to the history of laws on obscenity, censorship and freedom of speech.
