As part of the Garden Conservancy Open Days Program Digging Deeper series: Andrea Filippone is a boxwood expert who is on a crusade to get people to move beyond the sickly standard English and American box varieties to embrace lesser-known hybrids that are elegant and agreeably pungent, but better garden plants. The latest influx of the boxwood blight, Cylindrocladium buxicola, emphasizes the need for a shift to new hybrids and new, organic cultural practices. With proper soil management, the use of cultivars specifically chosen for the site, and the absence of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the plants will thrive in their new location for years to come. Andrea and Eric T. Fleischer operate a boxwood nursery at their home as well as F2 Environmental Design. Registration is $30 for Garden Conservancy members; $35 for nonmembers.
