An everyday object can be irresistible. Beyond the intended purpose to get the job done, objects can represent a memory or merge in unlikely, whimsical combinations. “Second Glance” presented at Alexandria’s Athenaeum, the home of Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association, features excerpts from Jane Franklin’s “EyeSoar” and new work in cooperation with Fine Art Photographer Fax Ayres.
“Second Glance” heightens the perception of photography with movement and sound that leads to a greater understanding of both visual art and dance. Artist Fax Ayres combines the aesthetics of photography and painting. Still lifes are compiled by merging objects to inspire a comic sensibility and a delicate balance of opposition. Fax’s words about process and relationship are used to provide a backbone to inspire dance and movement in “Second Glance”. Find the surreal in the mundane, and discover moments that draw a “Second Glance” performed by Jane Franklin Dance to music by Handel and Bach’s Suite #1 G Major Prelude; recorded by US Army Band clarinetist Martin Gold.
EyeSoar emphasizes the landscape and the people of Old Town Alexandria near The Athenaeum and West End Alexandria, a neighborhood where choreographer Jane Franklin resides. “The company shined when portraying inanimate surroundings…the dancers gave life to a parking lot by forming a vertical line with their bodies and hitting the floor in unison, evoking the heaviness of a line of cars. — the dance provided context to these otherwise ordinary places and activities.”
