•Brooke Pinto won the Ward 2 special election on June 16 to fill the seat vacated by longtime Council member Jack Evans in January — at more than 40 percent of the vote.
Once certified by the Board of Elections, Pinto will join the District Council as Ward 2’s representative by June 29. That term will last through this year, then Pinto will likely continue in a new term in 2021. Pinto won the June 2 Democratic primary to run in the Nov. 3 general election.
She will become the youngest Council member and the first Ward 2 rep to succeed Jack Evans in almost 30 years.
“I am proud to have won the special election to fill the vacant Ward 2 Council seat for the rest of this term,” Pinto said in a statement. “Thank you to the voters and residents of Ward 2 for putting your trust in me to lead and care for our community during this important moment in our history. I am honored to be Ward 2’s first woman to hold this seat and the youngest member of the D.C. Council in history … I look forward to working with all stakeholders, regardless of who you voted for, to ensure we can build a more equitable city together. On the immediate horizon are budget hearings that will impact how we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and take up the call for greater justice and fairness among our city’s residents.”
A former D.C. assistant attorney general, the 28-year-old Pinto, first endorsed by D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine, also garnered endorsements from Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut) and Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-Massachusetts), along with the Washington Post.
Hailing from Connecticut, Pinto went to Cornell and Georgetown Law. She did not use the public campaign financing program. A newcomer to D.C., she was the last to enter the Ward 2 race.
The Board of Elections supplied the following totals for the major candidates in the June 2 primary race for the Ward 2 seat, as of Friday, June 12: Pinto, 3,067 (28.33%); Patrick Kennedy, 2,716 (25.09%); Jordan Grossman, 2,332 (21.54%); Kishan Putta, 1,076 (9.94%). The final results have not been certified.
