Now that it’s officially December, we’ve got a lot of sparkling holiday events this weekend. Enjoy a holiday boat parade at the Wharf, celebrate the festive season at Dumbarton House and Volta Park, visit a European-style Christmas market at Heurich House and enjoy a jazzy holiday show at the Kennedy Center. Have fun!
A Very Special Visitor Will Be at Volta Park
Ho Ho Ho! Santa Claus himself will be at the Volta Park Holiday Market tomorrow from 3 – 6 p.m. The final market of the season will include all your usual market treats and goods, photos with ol’ St. Nick himself and a community tree lighting at sunset. More information can be found here.
Dumbarton House Celebrates the Holidays Too
Get in a festive mood with a trip to Dumbarton House for holiday fun tomorrow from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Enjoy a tour of the museum with a Federal-era holiday punch, craft-making, wassail and decorations galore. Who can even resist wassail this time of year? There will also be live music and light refreshments. More information on how to get tickets for the event can be found here.
Time Travel to the ‘70s
Beginning Dec. 1, the Watergate Hotel introduced “Scandalous Igloos” commemorating the 1970s. The interactive experience includes ‘70s era Singapore Slings, chocolate cigars, velvet chairs and lots more. There are even working Victrola record players upon which to play all your favorite ‘70s tunes on vinyl. Careful with that needle! The food takes you right back to everything popular in the mid-70s too, from lamb chops with mint jelly to lots of fondue flowing. Up to six guests can be in an igloo at once. Groovy baby! More information on the igloos can be found here.
The District’s Holiday Boat Parade Sails into Town Saturday
On Dec. 4 from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Wharf, enjoy the District’s annual Holiday Boat Parade. Over 60 decorated boats floating along the Washington Channel will be on view. For those on land, enjoy ornament decorating, fire pits with s’mores, ice skating and winter drink samples at the Waterfront Beer and Wine Garden. Best of all, at 8 p.m. there’ll be fireworks! This one’s a great family option. More information on the parade can be found here.
Returning Live, The Heurich House Christkindllmarkt
The 18th annual Christkindlmarkt is back in person this year at the Heurich House Museum, this weekend only. The indoor space will be closed, but the outdoor options and number of vendors have been doubled. The German-style Christmas market is open Friday from 4 – 8 p.m., Saturday 12 – 8 p.m. and Sunday 12 – 6 p.m. Happy shopping and Frohe Weihnachten! More information here.
See NPR’s “A Jazz Piano Christmas”
For one night only (Saturday) at 7 and 9 p.m., sit back, relax and enjoy a concert of holiday classics with a jazz flair. The Kennedy Center and NPR’s joint event sells out annually and features some of the best jazz pianists around. More information on how to grab the last bit of tickets can be found here.
That’s Lit! What? The National Christmas Tree!
