Profs and Pints DC presents: “A New War in Europe?” a look at tensions between Russia and Ukraine and U.S. options if they go to war, with Michael Kimmage, professor of history at Catholic University, fellow at the German Marshall Fund, and former U.S. State Department planner for that region.

It is not at all unlikely that a war between Russia and Ukraine could break out this winter. Were that to happen, it could become the first instance of a major war in Europe since 1945.
Come gain a sophisticated understanding of what led to the current crisis and of the potential consequences of armed conflict there from Dr. Michael Kimmage, who previous help the Russia/Ukraine portfolio as a member of the Secretary’s Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State.
He’ll discuss what generated the tension between Ukraine and Russia, why Putin might decide to order a Russian invasion of Ukraine, and how a wider war in Ukraine might serve the interests of Putin’s Russia.
Then he’ll examine what the potential armed conflict between those two nations means for neighboring countries such as Poland, Hungary, and the Baltic Republics, as well as for the NATO alliance and for Europe as a whole.
Finally, he’ll look at the potential U.S. response to the situation, tackling questions such as: What should the United States do prior to the outbreak of war? How should it respond if war breaks out? How should the United States think of Europe as a new chapter of political and military conflict begins on the very terrain where World War I and World War II were fought? (Advance tickets: $12.
