•Georgetown’s Business Improvement District (BID) – a commercial tax-funded non-profit business development organization responsible for numerous projects from streateries and widened sidewalk platforms (that may be a model for the nation), to pandemic business grants and holiday GLOW exhibitions, is starting the new year with two new professional employees. Faith Broderick is the BID’s new economic development director, and Peter Abrahams is its economic development and partnerships consultant. They will comprise the BID’s new economic development team leadership.
Broderick will oversee the BID’s economic development planning for projects that have been proposed and approved by the organization’s board and members of some 1000 Georgetown commercial real estate community, property owners, tenants, community groups, city leaders, and other stakeholders. Her team will “provide data analysis and strategic counsel on the Georgetown economy that helps to support a healthy and vibrant commercial district,” according to the BID. “Their task is to attract and retain office, retail, hospitality and service market tenants, and to continue recovery efforts for Georgetown’s commercial district, among other things.”
A former community planner with the DC Office of Planning managing citywide and neighborhood-based planning initiatives, Broderick earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Global Studies and Politics from Brandeis University and a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Georgetown University. She also worked for the International Downtown Association.
Abrahams task as the new partnerships consultant, is not only to help enhance tenant attraction and retention, but to expand event partnerships as well. For most of the past 30 years, he worked in publishing in the greater Washington area, including as market president and publisher of the Washington Business Journal and publisher of Modern Luxury. He is a founding partner of Volavox, a business development and strategic consulting firm. Abrahams is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire.
Broderick and Abrahams are replacing the BID’s former well-known planning and economic development director Jamie Scott who joined the DC Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development in October 2021 to be that office’s economic research and data manager. They are the latest of several new hires at BID including Greg Billing, who joined in December to be its transportation director; he was formerly the executive director of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association.
The Georgetown BID was established in 1999 by Georgetown property owners and merchants to set a standard of excellence in preserving historic charm while meeting contemporary needs… from marketing and special events, to transportation, economic development, placemaking and streetscapes. It manages and operates the Georgetown Clean Team that is recognizable by its blue trucks and often energetic team members.
