(Washington DC): The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington DC’s (GMCW) 2022-2023 season will celebrate inspirational women who advocated for the LGBTQ community. Phenomenal will pay tribute to the great Judy Garland, pop icon Whitney Houston, and the incomparable country music legend Dolly Parton. For more information and tickets please visit gmcw.org
“This season, we will present fun and entertaining shows with music you will recognize and songs you’ll want to tap your toe to,” GMCW Artistic Director Thea Kano said. “We’ll look at the music of vaudeville and the silver screen that illuminated the career of Judy Garland, the dance tunes and love songs of the fabulous Whitney Houston, and the inspiring lyrics and melodies of the incomparable Dolly Parton.”
The season will open with a tribute to Judy Garland. Soloists from the Chorus will share stories of the influential women in their lives, as they perform their favorite tunes including “Over the Rainbow,” “The Trolley Song,” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “The Man That Got Away,” and “Happy Days are Here Again.” (JUDY – October 22, 2022, Capital One Hall, VA)
Alongside the sparkly snow, tap dancing elves, over-the-top costumes, a dancing Christmas tree, and other festive surprises, the annual Holiday Show will feature festive favorites from celebrated women composers and arrangers – Kelly Clarkson, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Tyler, Nicole LaViolette, Heather Sorenson, and Kano. One of the best-selling music artists of all time; Whitney Houston promised publicly to “always be a friend to the gay community” and was widely seen as an LGBTQ+ icon. The Chorus will dance their way into the Lincoln Theatre to tunes including “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “How Will I Know,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “The Greatest Love of All.” (WHITNEY – March 11 &12, 2023, Lincoln Theatre)
The annual fundraiser, Spring Affair, will return for an in-person event at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, DC on May 13, 2023. Hosted by a celebrity guest emcee to be announced, guests will enjoy an evening of dinner, entertainment, an open-bar reception, as well as live and silent auctions. Country music legend, Dolly Parton has spoken out on multiple occasions in support of LGBTQ+ rights and support of marriage equality. The Chorus will close out the season with a celebration of her music including ‘Here You Come Again,” “Islands in the Stream,” “Jolene,” and “My Tennessee Mountain Home.” (DOLLY – June 3 & 4, 2023, Lincoln Theatre)
