Grace Street Coffee Roasters on Water Street hosted Coffee with a Cop on Jun 18 in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police Department and the Citizens Association of Georgetown. The gathering brought local police officers to Grace Street Coffee in order to encourage Georgetown residents to meet, speak with and pose questions they might have to the officers working in and around Georgetown.
The modern and minimalist, while still warm, café on 3299 K Street NW offered a selection of coffees and teas, while two MPD officers stood ready and available to speak with anyone who entered the store. The baristas behind the counter and the police officers alike welcomed everyone who walked in with a smile and a hello, creating a welcoming atmosphere that encouraged patrons to stay, have some coffee and feel comfortable voicing questions or concerns that they might have to the police.
Co-hosted by the Citizens Association of Georgetown, the ongoing meetings aim to generate dialogue between Georgetown residents and the officers who patrol the neighborhood to promote greater trust and confidence between civilians and law enforcement.
Neighborhood safety remains one of the association’s top priorities, and it operates several programs to that end, including the installation and maintenance of neighborhood cameras, a strong partnership with the Metropolitan Police Department and more. Events like Coffee with a Cop are part of the association’s mission of fostering community involvement in the community’s safety.
Just after the June 18 gathering. MPD Captain Darren Haskis of the Second District had some latest arrest news for CAG: “I just wanted to share two recent felony theft arrests the Second District made on M Street.
“On May 31, 2024, Second District officers arrested two thieves for stealing several items (totaling over $1k) of clothing from the Lululemon at 3265 M St. NW. They were placed under arrest following a foot pursuit by the officers.
“On June 13, 2024, Second District officers arrested one thief for stealing several items (totaling over $1k) of clothing from the Alo at 3200 M St. NW. The suspect here was armed with a large canister of bear spray.
“The Second District will continue to focus on making the Georgetown Business District a safe environment for all. Thank you.”
