At Least 4 Georgetown Businesses Burglarized Sept. 9-10

At least four Georgetown businesses were hit with burglaries and vandalism, September 9 to 10, the Metropolitan Police Department reported. Five persons were taken into custody on charges that included burglary and fleeing from law enforcement.

Businesses that were attacked include Morgan’s Pharmacy where a door was kicked in, and burglaries at CVS, Cask and Barrel and Pearson’s Wine & Spirits stores, all on Wisconsin Avenue. The Georgetown Business Improvement District crime monitoring staff were asked by MPD to collect reports of any other incidents in the local area.

Burglaries and damage to storefronts also were reported in three other neighborhoods around the city, especially at CityCenterDC.  According to the Washington Post, the incidents may have been in response to the release of a police body-cam video showing an MPD officer firing at least ten shots and killing a man in Southeast D.C. on Sept. 7. Police reported that protesters were gathering around 10:30 p.m. at the Seventh District police station in Southeast.  Some were chanting, “Don’t shoot!”

Police increased their presence overnight in the affected areas and would continue to step up the allocation of resources today, MPD said. “They will be on full activation tonight. They will have a strong presence in Georgetown.”

The Georgetown Business Improvement District advised businesses to take precautions today by removing valuable merchandise from storefronts, and in some cases from the stores, overnight.  Any incidents should be reported to John Wiebenson —  jwiebenson@georgetowndc.com — and Charles Young — cyoung@georgetowndc.com  — who are compiling and communicating information between the Georgetown business community and the MPD.
