The 76th Emmy Awards: A Fun and Entertaining Romp Through TV’s Latest

The 76th Emmy Awards, hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, were just over three hours of delightful jokes and bits sandwiched between viral awards moments. The two traded digs at each other during an opening monologue, and by the show’s end, their castmates in the pandemic favorite “Schitt’s Creek” Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy, joined them on stage to present the final award.

The first presenters, “Only Murders in the Building’s” Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, were funny enough that many commented on social media asking them to host the next Oscars ceremony in 2025. Gomez tried to stifle her laughter as the iconic duo did their effortless comedy bit, playfully insulting each other. Eventually, Gomez bantered, “And let me say, what an honor it is to work with two men who are this far away from being childless cat ladies.” The remark was a reference to her best friend Taylor Swift’s endorsement of presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Swift referenced Trump’s running mate’s referral to Harris as a “childless cat lady.”

The Firsts

There were of course, many firsts throughout the broadcast. Liza Colón-Zayas became the first Latina actress to win Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Tina in “The Bear” (sidenote: the episode in the most recent season featuring her character was spectacularly done).

“Shōgun” star Anna Sawai also accepted her first Emmy for best lead actress in a drama series. She is the first Asian winner in the category.

Also, Lamorne Morris, who many millennials first got to know as Winston Bishop in the sitcom “New Girl,” nabbed his first Emmy for his role in “Fargo.”

The Fun

It was an absolute delight to watch the Boomer version of Travis and Taylor, Meryl Streep and Martin Short, sat together, fueling dating rumors. The two spent a much of the broadcast laughing and whispering together while seated next to costars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez and their significant others, Martin’s wife Anne Stringfield and Gomez’s boyfriend Benny Blanco.

Hulu’s Shōgun, in its first year eligible, broke the record for the most Emmys won by a show in a single year (18), beating “Game of Thrones” and the limited series “John Adams.” Viewers couldn’t help but feel the excitement among the cast as they celebrated their Emmy firsts.

Modern day Rodgers and Hammerstein Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are now in the EGOT club. They won a Creative Arts Primetime Emmy in the Outstanding Music & Lyrics category for their song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” from “Only Murders in the Building.” Previously, they earned their Grammy for the music of “Dear Evan Hansen,” an Oscar for “City of Stars” from the movie “La La Land,” and their Tony for both “Dear Evan Hansen” and the Broadway run of “A Strange Loop.”
