On Thursday, April 24, The Georgetowner’s Cultural Leadership Breakfast Series will present a talk by Dr. Beatrice Gurwitz, executive director of the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum. Admission to the event, at 1310 Kitchen & Bar, 1310 Wisconsin Ave. NW, is $40, payable in advance at georgetowner.com or via Eventbrite.
Exploring the Jewish experience in the national capital region, the Capital Jewish Museum — incorporating the oldest purpose-built synagogue building in Washington, D.C., dedicated in 1876 — opened as part of the seven-acre Capitol Crossing development in June of 2023. Dr. Gurwitz became the museum’s executive director last September, following interim executive director Ivy Barsky.
Dr. Gurwitz, whose academic work focuses on the history of Jewish communities and other ethnic groups in Latin America, is the author of “Argentine Jews in the Age of Revolt.” Previously deputy director of the National Humanities Alliance, she holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley.
At the April 24 breakfast, Dr. Gurwitz will share how the new museum interprets Jewish American history for different audiences and discuss the role of culture-specific museums in general.
Doors open at 1310 Kitchen & Bar at 8:30 a.m. for a light buffet breakfast; the program will follow from 9 to 10 a.m. To purchase Tickets, click HERE.
