The $28-million sale of Halcyon House was disclosed last week without identifying the new owner. Soon enough, Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris was revealed as the new owner thanks to a late Thursday scoop by the Wall Street Journal. The sale is a record price for a home in Washington, D.C.
Harris and his wife Marjorie intend to use Halcyon House as a private residence. They join other notables in the neighborhood. Mark Ein, a minority owner of the Commanders, owns the former home of Katharine Graham, once the publisher and owner of the Washington Post. Eric Schmidt, also a minority owner of the Commanders, owns the former home of Jacqueline Kennedy on N Street. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent owns a mansion on R Street. Even Post publisher and CEO William Lewis owns a place in Georgetown.
A native of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Harris knows D.C. He cofounded private-equity firm Apollo Global Management and founded investment firm 26North Partners. He also owns the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils. The announcement of the sale came the same day as design renderings were revealed for the new Commanders stadium at the RFK site.
The seller Sachiko Kuno, who used the mansion as headquarters for her Halcyon nonprofit, said in a statement: “I’m grateful to have been a steward of such a special property for 15 years, and for it to have done so much good for entrepreneurs.”
The 30,000-square-foot property is one of Washington’s most historic mansions at 3400-3410 Prospect St., NW, with a back garden, studio and pool. Its builder and original 1787 occupant was Benjamin Stoddert, the first Secretary of the Navy and friend of George Washington. Halcyon House is integral to the founding of the city of Washington as it become the capital of the new republic.
Changed throughout the decades, the building received its most significant renovation in the latter years of the 20th century thanks to John Dreyfuss, whose family owned the mansion from 1966 until March 2012.
Mark and Hunter McFadden of Compass represented Kuno in the Georgetown sale. Harris was represented by Daniel Heider of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. Last week, neither Mark McFadden — who had no comment — nor TTR Sotheby’s could tell The Georgetowner who the new owner is, because of nondisclosure agreements.
